I was really inspired by a lecture I had on drawing and that its all about freedom really in any material you chose to use. The lecturer used her children's drawings and explained the stories behind them and how her kids copy one another and when they run out of paper just sellotape on more! You can also see how the gender of the child reflects on their work. For example little boys like to draw dragons and wars and girls, pictures of themselves and houses!

My friends old drawing on the wall behind his bed; a drawing of Spongebob Square Pants in battle. Him and his parents refuse ever to paint over this wall of imagination! |
In film this week we started editing a film we did from playing outside in the snow with a 2nd years monolugue about Wolverhampton placed in the middle of it...quite strange however should end up quite interesting.
As I was singing some Christmas carols with chamber choir at Corsham court I discovered some incredible art books and artists, as we had a long interval. Much more traditional art, this made me realise how much I love Art History and as Damien Hirst said...

'Art is not about the way you do things, but about the way you understand them.'
This is all about comprehending the contexts in which art (of all forms) is made and trying to give the audience something to pick up on and maybe understand about a 10th of what was going on inside someones mind and culture while creating.
More interesting quotes I like...
I am unable to make any distinction between the feeling I get from life and the way I translate that feeling into painting.
Henri Mattise
Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance.
Sam Johnson
You can do things in the name of art or you can do art doing things.
Damien Hirst
The fact that people break down and cry when confronted with my pictures shows that I can communicate those basic human emotions.. the people who weep before my pictures are having the same religious experience I had when painting them. And if you say you are moved only by their color relationships then you miss the point.
Mark Rothko
The only time I feel alive is when I'm painting.
Vincent van Gogh
The essence of drawing is the line exploring space.
Andy Goldsworthy
I believe art has to take responsibility but it should not give up being art.
Anselm Kiefer
This weeks lunch time Viva concert I wasn't in so I thought more opportunity to do more blind drawings. It was a great concert all on improv jazz however unfortunately I didn't really experiment with color as I only had a standard biro on me however in 'watermelon man' I rotated the page upside down, which gives 2 very different images.
One day I want to create a double faced music blind drawing like below.
