Week 5

November 1st-7th
On monday I went up to Sion Hill and developed some more b&w photos. I found this a little more challenging when there was no teacher around but luckily there were a few other from my course there to help me out a bit.Through out last week I was just testing out my SLR with color film in it and got some developed at Jessops. Below is a photo of the university with 'sun damage' however I quite like the effect!
Later on in the day I was volunteering for the new festival Illuminate Bath. I had a long shift from 3.30 till 8.30 where I started to help by setting up installations in and around the Green Park Brasserie and then from 6 I was on the door for the opening party and guiding people through and around the site. Pictures from the event can be seen here. While waiting one of the works near by was a participating piece. I created a little face projected on the main entrance hall.
I finally started to put ideas into my sketchbook, relating music and colours and following on from the idea of systems art.

This is just a starting point, for ideas. I will then progress this idea for a double page on each and think of objects (natural and human made) which have something which has a discrete similarity either colour or shape of instrument etc.

On wednesday I had another shift at Illuminate Bath this time working on a very successful project called Eye Tracking. I really liked working on this light installation the artist Bob told me a lot about the piece and interesting facts like we cant stare at one thing for more than 10 seconds without loosing focus  and the human eye can see 100 frames in just 1 second. He collaborated with Bristol University experimental psychology department and got them to track peoples eyes staring at the Roman Baths building (next to Pump Room)for 30 seconds. The multicoloured spots indicate this. He then collected from the 10 of them a quick sketch of the building. It was very interesting as if you carefully observed one colour spot and the image they drew you can notice what they missed out on the pictures is also what they didn't see, generally.

After we had setup I had a nice surprise seeing my tutor there as it was her husbands work and was nice having company as the other volunteer had not turned up yet! All I did after this was talk to the public about the work and show them the sketches, hand out programs and click, the number of people I saw go by. Then the South West ITV weather team showed up and were filming us and the art project as it was raining and the coloured spots looked like rain and wanted to advertise Illuminate Bath!

In photography we had a lecture on how to do powerpoint for our presentations in 2 weeks. I then watched an interesting video were the photographer Rankin recreated the Seven Photographs That Changed Fashion. As Shaun, Anna and myself were walking out Sion Hill there was a big installation of art with a run way, a screen projecting us on it from a camera and A LOT of quite cooky clothes but high designer labels from charity shops on rails. There was then a survey we had to fill in asking what we chose wear and if we would wear it as an everyday item. Here are some pictures of us 'participating in art'!!
