week 14

PRINTMAKING
This week I made my first proper prints! I did it of 2 blind drawings at a concert I watched last week, a cellist and a flute and piano duet. I think it turned out quite well too, used the right amount of arm pressure, to get a good amount of ink transferred to the paper. I also believe it was beginners luck as everyones went well, and we got guidance! I think what I really love about printing as Mandy said, "It's the best combination of mixing the old with the new." I love rolling the press wheel; like rolling back time. I used a press similar to the one below however the one I used had a massive wheel and generally larger. But both from the 18th Century.

PHOTOGRAPHY

I now have the photos we took in the studio from a few weeks ago. We took photos of objects and art and learnt how to adjust the light etc depending it being flat or and object.

ANIMATION
Today in film we had a trouble shooting session where we could ask lots of questions about what we didn't understand and surprisingly it lasted 4 hours!! In the break Martin showed us a funny video...

I also edited the Bird-Scissor-Ladder animation from a few weeks back with music now. The song playing is ironically 3 little birds by the legend Bob Marley and then some recorded bird noises I made last week, as the weather was nice and birds came out to sing. I then edited it all on Final Cut.

PRINTMAKING
Although we didn't end up making any prints by the end of the lesson; I really enjoyed it. We mainly had a tour of the room and becoming familiar with utensils we will be using, methods of printing and research. At the end of the lesson I went away with my own heavy weight etching needle, an aluminium plate to draw on and lots of etching books from the library.

After first blind drawing

I initially wanted to draw some of my pictures from my blind drawing book of concerts but then I thought why copy a blind drawing when I can do a 'real' one on Wednesday. So I drew a flute duet and then the next day in another uni concert I drew cellist in the corner-seperate pieces and ideas. I then tried writing trio but I forgot it came out backwards so it looks like the word art! The images below are various techniques used in print, from the book Contemporary Print.

ANIMATION

This week it was a very short lesson going through ideas for final film/animation for when we get back after Easter and a few queries and questions about Final Cut and iStop Motion. Later on in the week I also found this really cool animation, literally amazes me how he did it!

PHOTOGRAPHY
Last week sometime I came across this huge online archive of old issues of Desert Magazine. Hundreds of issues ranging from the ’30s through the ’90s are scanned in and available to look at for free.  When I first found the archive I went immediately to the 1970s issues, but they’re not nearly as interesting as the ones from the ’30s for some reason.  Maybe it’s the photos, the best of the ’30s covers have a tinted, almost surrealistic look about them. The ads are just as good–lots of ones for ’30s desert resorts in Palm Springs that look overrun with starlets and deco architecture!
